Urbanization is one of the trends in the global economy at present. Just a few hundred years ago, only a few percent of the world's population lived in cities, but now more than 50% of the population lives in cities and this figure will grow.
It was urbanization that caused the appearance of very large urban agglomerations, otherwise called megacities, on the world map. Currently, megacities are home to about 1 billion of people. However, megacities themselves concentrate not only people, but also significant infrastructure, production, financial and other institutions, thereby influencing the global economy.
This study is devoted to exploring the role of megacities in the global economy, as well as studying the factors that influence the economic state of megacities. The purpose of the study is to analyze the social and economic aspects of megacities development in the world economy and to identify key factors of their economic growth. The object of study is economic impacts of megacities development in the world economy. The subject of the study is the key factors of megacities economic development and their correlation.
After conducting a deep theoretical analysis and using the method of econometric modeling, the author came to the conclusion that the main role of megacities in the global economy is to be an urbanized center of concentration of people with economic freedoms and great opportunities for doing business. However, while developing economically, it is important to remember about sustainable development: megacities have a large number of problems that require many changes in environmental and social terms.
The results of this study can be practically applied by authorities at different levels to develop an effective strategy for unlocking the economic potential of megacities, while trying to avoid the negative consequences of urbanization.
