The image of Listener in “The Orphan’s Tales” by Catherynne M. Valente is investigated in this research. The characters that are the listeners of the embedded stories are under consideration. The author pays attention to the origin of a “story within a story” and its manifestation in the novel. The inner mythological semantics of Listener makes him / her equal to the narrated stories and the narrator as well. The research work shows that the Listener possesses and reveals three functions: active listening, transferring and personal composing. The functions in question can be correlated to the trauma narratives. Listening seems to be a process being transformed into composing as a process of self-identification. Listener / Reader becomes the most active narrator / composer thus revealing his or her ability to make his or her own decisions, to take on the personal responsibility for the destiny.
