Major sporting events have a huge impact on various areas of public life. In particular, such events have a significant impact on the tourist flow in the country, stimulating the growth of attendance and contributing to the development of the tourism industry. Therefore, the study of the impact of major sporting events on the tourist flow of the Russian Federation was chosen as the topic of the thesis.
The purpose of this graduation thesis was to study the impact of international sport mega-events on the number of tourists in Russia. The study was examined the relationship between sport mega-events and tourism, examining how these events have affected the inflow of tourists before and after the event. Also, the study analyzed the economic, cultural and social factors affecting the relationship between sport mega-events and tourism in Russia.
Understanding the impact of sport mega-events on the number of tourists in Russia is crucial for policymakers, event organizers and the tourism industry, especially, in the post-pandemic era, when tourism plays a vital role in the country's economic recovery.
The object of research was the incoming flows of tourists from 64 countries to the Russian Federation.
The subject of the research was the influence of sport mega-event on the foreign tourist’s inflows in Russia.
Before starting the study, the works of foreign and domestic researchers on this topic were familiarized. Russian researchers focused on the economic, cultural and social impact of mega-events on tourism in the country. Foreign scientists also conducted extensive research on this topic, focusing on the global impact of mega-events on tourism.
In the first chapter was considered the role of international sport mega-events in tourism development and found out that international mega-events play a vital role in tourism development by stimulating economic growth, improving infrastructure, promoting branding of tourist destinations, increasing tourist demand and fostering social and cultural exchange. By taking advantage of the opportunities offered by such events, host cities and countries can create a lasting legacy that will benefit their tourism industry and overall development.
Also, was considered the relationship between international sport mega-events and tourism and found out that the relationship between international mega-events and tourism is multifaceted and can have both positive and negative effects. Hosting a mega-event can lead to increased tourism, improve the destination's image and infrastructure development. However, it can also lead to financial risks, environmental problems and social displacement. In order for the host country to maximize the benefits and minimize the drawbacks, careful planning and sustainable event management practices are crucial.
Next, cases of major sporting events in Russia were considered - the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi 2014 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. We conducted a comparative analysis of these activities based on the literature analysis.
In the second part of the thesis, empirical research was carried out. The tourist flow itself in 64 countries for 2014-2023 was studied in great detail. For example, after the study, proposals were made to divide the selected countries into 4 groups, taking into account changes in tourist flows. A study was also carried out in the econometric part of the work, the conclusions of which can be found below.
At the end of the work, the topic of sustainable tourism in the Russian Federation was considered, and recommendations were made for its improvement. In addition, the negative impact of hosting major sporting events was examined and ways to eliminate the negative impacts were proposed within the framework of sustainable tourism development goals.
At the end of the work, conclusions about the study were drawn. In the end, the work achieved the initially set objectives and described the impact of major sporting events on the tourist flow to the Russian Federation.
