Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the last 50 years. For many countries, tourism is an important source of income, the economy of such countries is highly dependent on it. As a result, it was possible to detect the impact of such major events as the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, as well as the World Football Championships, on the flow of foreign tourists to the host countries. For empirical analysis of data provided by the UNWTO for the countries of the world for the period 1995-2019. Gravity model evaluation includes the main determinants covering the description of world tourist flows. In addition, the potential values of tourist flows that arise due to hosting a strange sporting mega-event were calculated. Comparing the results with the values found, the author identified a number of countries for which mega-events were found to have a positive, negative and mixed impact. It is noteworthy that for the United States, Canada, China and Italy, the hosting of the Olympics in the 00s was investigated on the fact of the tourist market.
